Victorinox History: The Story of the Original Swiss Army Knife

The history of Victorinox began in 1884, when Swiss cutler Karl Elsener opened a small workshop in Ibach-Schwyz, Switzerland. From these modest beginnings came one of the world’s most recognisable pocket tools: the Original Swiss Army Knife™.

For more than 140 years, Victorinox has combined Swiss precision, practical design and skilled craftsmanship to create dependable products for everyday use, outdoor adventures, professional work and travel. Although best known as the maker of the Swiss Army Knife, the family-owned company has expanded into household and professional knives, watches and travel gear.

The Beginning of Victorinox

1884 – Karl Elsener Opens His Workshop

Karl Elsener I established his cutler’s workshop in Ibach, in the Swiss canton of Schwyz. His mother, Victoria, played an important role in supporting the young business during its early years.

1891 – The First Swiss Soldier’s Knives

Karl Elsener founded the Association of Swiss Master Cutlers and secured an important contract to supply soldier’s knives to the Swiss Army. This marked a major step in the development of Swiss knife manufacturing.

1897 – The Original Swiss Officer’s Knife

Elsener patented the “Original Swiss Officer’s and Sports Knife”. Its compact, multifunctional design would eventually become known worldwide as the Original Swiss Army Knife™.

The Victorinox Name and Cross & Shield Emblem

1909 – The Victoria Brand Name

Following the death of his mother, Karl Elsener chose “Victoria” as the brand name in her honour. In the same year, he registered the famous Cross & Shield emblem as a trademark.

The Victorinox Cross & Shield is now recognised internationally and has been registered in more than 120 countries.

1918 – A New Generation Takes Charge

Carl Elsener II assumed responsibility for managing the growing family workshop, continuing its commitment to quality Swiss knife production.

1921 – The Victorinox Name Is Created

The development of stainless steel transformed the cutlery industry. Stainless steel became known as “Inox”, from the French term acier inoxydable.

Combining “Victoria” with “Inox” created the company name known today: Victorinox.

Advancing Swiss Knife Manufacturing

1931 – Automated Knife Production

Victorinox introduced automation to improve manufacturing consistency. Brown Boveri was commissioned to install an all-electric hardening facility at the Ibach factory, helping the company maintain reliable quality throughout its knife production.

1945 – Swiss Army Knives Gain International Popularity

After the Second World War, the United States Army ordered Victorinox pocket knives for sale through its Post Exchange stores.

The knives became popular souvenirs among American soldiers stationed in Europe. As the German name was difficult for many English speakers to pronounce, the practical pocket tool became widely known as the “Swiss Army Knife”.

1950 – Third-Generation Family Management

Carl Elsener III took over the management of Victorinox and continued developing the company’s international reputation.

NASA ordered 50 Victorinox Master Craftsman knives, one of the company’s most popular Officer’s Knife models at the time. This association helped strengthen the Swiss Army Knife’s reputation as a dependable tool for exploration and technical work.
