Tony founded Mag Instrument in 1955 with a clear ambition: to manufacture dependable, high-quality products in the United States. His dedication to American manufacturing, continual improvement and practical design would eventually lead to the creation of the legendary Maglite flashlight.

From a Garage Workshop to an International Brand
Born in New York City during the Great Depression and raised in Croatia, Tony Maglica returned to the United States in 1950. Although he spoke little English, he brought with him valuable training as an experimental machinist and a determination to build a better future.
Tony found employment wherever he could while teaching himself English a few words at a time. Outside his working hours, he continued developing his machining skills and gradually saved enough money to place a $125 deposit on his first lathe.
That modest investment marked the beginning of a remarkable manufacturing story. Working alone from a garage workshop near Los Angeles, Tony began producing precision components for industrial, aerospace and military customers. His ability to improve manufacturing processes while maintaining consistently high standards quickly earned him a reputation for quality, efficiency and inventive engineering.
Mag Instrument was formally incorporated in 1974, bringing together Tony’s hands-on leadership, precision-machining expertise and belief that excellent products should be supported by equally dependable customer service.
The Birth of the Maglite Flashlight
After years of manufacturing precision components, Tony turned his attention to improving the conventional flashlight. His objective was to create a rugged, dependable and carefully engineered light suitable for demanding professional use.
The first Maglite flashlight was introduced in 1979 and initially marketed towards police officers, firefighters, mechanics and other public-safety professionals. Its tough anodised aluminium body, adjustable focusing beam and solid construction helped distinguish it from the plastic flashlights widely available at the time.
The reputation of the Maglite torch spread quickly. Professionals valued its durability and reliability, while outdoor users discovered a dependable light for camping, bushcraft, survival kits, vehicle emergencies and general everyday use.
Classic Maglite Models
Following the success of the original flashlight, Mag Instrument continued to develop portable lighting products for different users and applications.
The Maglite Rechargeable Flashlight System combined the brand’s familiar construction with rechargeable power for professional and frequent-use environments. In 1984, the Mini Maglite AA was launched, bringing Maglite engineering to a smaller and more convenient personal torch.
A compact AAA version followed in 1987, designed for applications where portability and precise illumination were essential. In 1988, Maglite introduced the Solitaire: an exceptionally small, single-AAA flashlight suitable for keys, pockets, handbags and compact emergency kits.
These products helped establish Maglite across several portable-lighting categories, from full-size professional flashlights to lightweight everyday-carry torches.
A Classic of American Industrial Design
Maglite is more than a practical lighting brand. Its distinctive cylindrical body, knurled grip and adjustable beam have made the Maglite flashlight an enduring example of functional American design.
