Description

We're all familiar with the standard sized 'Army' Firesteel and Ferro Rod Blank, but sometimes you may require a larger high-grade ferrocerium steel rod to create even larger showers of sparks, and the Boonies Outdoor XL Ferro Rod Blank is roughly twice the size of the standard army size, making it one of the largest blanks available on the market today.

These XL firesteels are great if adding your own handle for use when lighting campfires, but they're equally good at lighting wood burning stoves at home. In fact, as well as survival and home use, the Boonies Outdoor Range has even been used in the special effects world on mainstream movies due to their high-spark yield.

The XL Army Firesteel measures 12.5 x 126.5mm and is made to a very high standard - they mustn't be compared to cheaply manufactured ferrocerium rods that are, sadly, common in this day and age.

Are your ferro rods the harder rod variant? i.e Austrian / Swedish style rods not the softer type.

These rods are somewhere in between. Boonies Outdoor design them so they're easy to use in harsh conditions. For example, in super-cold environments, the hardest firesteel blanks are difficult to use - especially with cold hands, or when wearing gloves. Super-soft ferro rods wear away too quickly. Boonies Outdoor Firesteels are made for ease of use in any environment, as well as in an outdoor education setting and therefore the hardness is somewhere in between.
